Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir

Hljóð í ljóði

Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir (Thordis Gerdur Jonsdottir) is a cellist equally fluent in classical music and jazz.

Combining the accuracy and sensitivity of classical chamber music with the free expression and playfulness of jazz and improvisation, she seeks to erase the borders of the two genres into something that is uniquely her own sound and musical intention.

For the past years Thordis has been experimenting with finding the cello a place in jazz as a leading instruments as well as exploring where improvisation can aid with more personal interpretation in chamber music.

Thordis' latest project is a recording of her own compositions, inspired by new and older Icelandic poetry.

The album was recorded in June 2025 with
Birgir Steinn Theodórsson on bass
Hilmar Jensson on guitar
Matthías Hemstock on drums
Óskar Guðjónssson on saxophone

Recorded by tonmeister Þorgrímur Þorsteinsson.
